Discussion of Sunderland Women’s 23/24 Campaign.
I spoke with fellow Sunderland fan Andrew to discuss the lasses season.
What has been the most memorable Sunderland ladies match for you?
‘The most memorable Sunderland ladies game in my opinion was Sunderland vs Durham back in March. I thought it was fantastic; the atmosphere and the overall quality of the game was superb. My love for women’s football to be honest increased a hell of a lot during the European championships and obviously with England winning the women euro final just increased my respect even more for the women’s game’.
What do you think of their campaign this season?
‘The campaign this season has been very strong and a lot better from last season; obviously the lasses will probably be left frustrated that we couldn’t win the league and get promoted but it’s been a superb season and Mary Mcateer has been a great player for the lasses this season’.
What are you looking for from them going forward?
‘To be honest, next season more of the same but aim to turn those draws into wins and aim to win the league next season; that has to be the aim. We have a quality team and a quality manager in Mel Reay who has done an outstanding job with the lasses’.
Overall, looking at both the ladies and men’s, how would you sum up supporting SAFC this season?
‘It’s been a very underwhelming season for the men but hopefully we can attack the summer and then start the season off very positively. For the women, a breath of fresh air to be honest because as you can see every single day, the women’s game is evolving and developing and so it should be. There is a lot of high technical talented women players in the game and the lionesses are huge inspirations to many young female footballers out there who want to develop their game’.
